Hi natf2

I've been having fps issues for the past few months in tf2. At first I thought it was an update to tf2, something that would just break my fps for no reason, and I didn't think anything of it, I just thought it was tf2 being tf2. But I recently noticed that I actually get perfect fps when I'm standing still, however if I start moving my mouse (looking around) I start dropping below 30 fps. I've tried every mat_queue_mode option available, I've tried dxlevel 80, 81, and 95, and they all do the exact same thing. I've tried two different fps configs, and no fps config at all, and I still get the exact same issue. Does anyone know what would cause this? Here are my specs:

AMD Athlon II X2 270 (Regor) 3.4 GHz
NVIDIA ASUS GTX 460 768 MB
650W Antec 80+ bronze PSU
4GB DDR3 1033 MHz
320 x2 GB HDD
Logitech G500 Mouse
Razer Lycosa Keyboard
SteelSeries Siberia V2 Headset
1024x768 Resolution @ 85Hz

I typically run every game I have on max settings and it runs perfectly fine, its just tf2 that has issues, and I have no idea what im doing wrong. I've tried re-installing the game, defragging the gcf file, etc.. plz halp

seagull told me to try that but I figured I had already tried defragging with the steam thing, and I had already reinstalled the game from scratch, so I dunno if that would help at all.

edit: I just tried running l4d2 and im getting the exact same thing, good fps until i start looking around aka moving my mouse. I can run battlefield bad company 2 at max settings and get no drops at all, so im guessing maybe this is a source engine thing.

I mean Im looking at net graph, and anytime i start looking around it dips to 30 fps, then i stop looking around and it instantly jumps back to 140 fps. I'm running battlefield bad company 2 right now and theres no problems, so i guess its a source engine thing.

the problem has to do with the source engine not being optimized to fully utilize the gpu and rather relies more on the cpu instead. i came from a core2duo oc'd to 3ghz with a gtx 275 and could barely get 60fps on medium settings in 6v6. then i upgraded to a 2600k and got a constant 300fps with the same gpu.

a long shot but you may want to try m_rawinput 1. Or if you are already using that, change it to zero.

Have you tried running tf2 at different resolutions and enabled/disabled gpu scaling? Might perform better on your display's native resolution and/or aspect ratio

Nvm, guess you could roll back nvidia drivers or system restore as a last resort

Maybe just do a complete clean install of your OS? Could be some bad drivers and such, but there's too many things too "check" that you might be better off starting fresh.

I'm experiencing similar issues, the game seems to stutter whenever I move. This started happening in the recent months.

There is reason to believe that system configs with an AMD cpu can't run this game properly anymore. Threads all over the tf2 forums complaining about reduced fps, most are using some variant of an AMD cpu.

If you want to try some stuff...

-Use rivatuner/http://www.nhancer.com/ to change LODBiasRange and mipmaping to highest values (+15). Though i'm not sure if these settings are available to gpus after rivatuner's development, nor does the article below describe how to do the same on nhancer.

Read the last section of this article, http://tf2pubbing.blogspot.com/2011/08/get-more-fps-in-tf2-pt-2.html

-Make sure system drivers/process's aren't causing huge latency issues. Use LatentyMon, http://www.resplendence.com/latencymon, to check for trouble makers. ~500micro seconds throughout playing and idling is okay (though not great). If you find that a certain driver is causing high latency, look for updates. If you're on windows vista/7 and the sata ports are operating in IDE mode, consider installing ahci drivers; you might have to consult to your motherboard manual and google.

-tlb patch tool

-good stuff here http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1315790

best of luck, if you're considering purchasing a new machine wait couple months for ivy bridge (or for 2500/k prices to fall) and 28nm graphics from nvidia/amd.

To put it simply your CPU is really weak and is bottlenecking the hell out of your gtx 460. Really you might as well of spent $30 dollars on a GPU because that's all your getting out of that ~$150 460 with a slow processor like that.

Do you know what motherboard you have? It's very likely you can just pony up to something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103995 and do a simple swap out with your CPU no other trouble involved. You'll have to start on a fresh install of windows though.

Just for reference I had an E8400 (intel dual core, a bit faster than what you have) overclocked to 4GHz and a gtx 465 and I had to use an fps config to get playable framerates.

Try reinstalling your drivers. Sounds stupid but someone on another forum I visit had the exact same issue and this fixed it for them.

i'd suggest rolling back to the late october nvidia drivers. from my experience the newer nvidia beta drivers (using a 560ti 448 core) and the recent whql drivers haven't been any good. they've made my idle gpu temps higher than normal and i've had a 50% performance decrease in tf2 with the new whql drivers.

also it is known that the current nvidia driver dev team is known as the "b team" as the regular driver dev team is currently working on drivers for the 600 series. take that for what it's worth.
