friend while your sassy putdown is most amusing if you would take a gander back at the original post you'll find that the question posed in the post itself does not seem to match up with the title of the thread

i would posit that this shocking discrepency may in fact be causing the confusion you have so rightly noticed and pointed out!

Alot of the posts are even just games that they only pub on though lol

One of my friends is the best player in the world in terms of skill at Shattered Horizon.

Of course no one plays that game anymore and it never made it to competitive play so it doesn't really matter.

Still, it was impressive.

I went to the youth Olympics for baseball... That's a game right? Sorta pro for the under 18 crowd... Also state champion for the 12 year old age group in Shurri Ryu. I've sucked at every video game I've ever played :(

I also used to be pretty damn good at guitar hero, never like top 10 or anything but I did used to upload my scores to scorehero back in the days of gh2, and when GH3 rolled around I FC'd or was a few notes away from FCing like 63/70 songs in the game

what about you lange? you're prolly better than that idk (unless you were kidding)

Me, phaser, unf, hero, Dospac, kent and a few others all participated in top level TFC for years. Personally I played from 99-05ish.

Just about every decent TF2 player I've seen can play Tribes at an upper level pretty easily from what I've seen. Being a "tribes vet" doesn't really seem to help that much compared to being a "competitive TF2 player". solidsnake, remics, harbleu, boulder, me (lol) can all play the game pretty well. also kwazi

pro implies making money. pretty much everyone here are just dominant in other equally as dead games as tf2, or are only at high/amateur levels of games with actual money in it.

ie xen in ns
many at random games like brink/tribes
many of the "veteran" top canadian tf2 players were high level clan arena players
plenty of mid/high to high quake duelers although none technically made any significant money

the closest to someone being pro level at a game with real competition is probably syckness who almost got out of an mlg open bracket if I remember right. did painuser ever play tf2?

Oreoz, the word "esports" was non existent 10 years ago and things have significantly changed in modern day advertising paving the way for more sponsoring/exposure. The tfc lan that cpl hosted in 03? i believe had a cash prize but that might've been the only major one. In the years of tfc/ns/etc. it was A LOT different. The whole esports competitive scene is the biggest it has ever been which means the prizes are the biggest as well.. Point is being pro isn't all about making money, it's being one of the best at whatever game you play.

i'd say pro means that you make a living off of whatever you're doing.

literally every game besides SC is instantly tossed out if you want to nitpick.

guys guys

he was pretty clearly using pro in the vernacular sense of a skill level not in the sense of being a professional video game player

let's not be willfully obtuse okay

in case you are confused that is a 2d asteroids style spaceship game where the spaceships are playing a facsimile of hockey with a glowing sphere of fire

also i made a 1.6 team with some friends from the spaceship hockey game and we made CAL-IM in our 3rd season having never played a scrim

Oh shit, I used to play Subspace too. Except mostly Trench Wars in TWLB ladder.

counterstrike was huge in 03. much bigger than any of the games you bring up. I can't recall whether they referred to it as "esports" then. I think so. the term is still retarded

league, dota, dota2 in the next 6months

current capcom fighting games

counterstrike in its prime(some currently in europe), wc3 in its prime

the distinction is important because the more money is in the game the more competition comes as a result. talking about someone being "pro" at a game with a competition pool of 17 players is fucking retarded. don't cheapen the term so you can feel good about yourself.

Actually 03 is when "clans" started turning into "teams" with Team 3D lol

Some communities are fairly large without much money involved. ie tf2. I'd still consider the top players "pro".
