(I am not the creator, merely raising awareness and passing along the info to people who might be interested)

http://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/tgqnn/testing_my_free_high_quality_livestreaming/

The idea is to have a free alternative to xsplit that produces streamed content with quality just as high, or even higher. From what I've seen of the creator's test dota2 streams it seems promising even though it's still in alpha.

From what I've read, it looks like the program will have overlays and built-in microphone recording like xsplit, eventually.

Haven't tested it out in TF2 yet. I'm about to, though.

The website for this app is here: http://www.ffsplit.com/

Wow, that sounds pretty awesome. It looks like the quality on his vods is pretty much the same as the paid version of xsplit.

I dunno how he managed to get the MP3 audio codec in there, but if that stays and doesn't get thrown to the wayside due to licensing costs like it did in XSplit, then I might seriously consider using this. AAC is seriously just not as good, no matter which way you slice it.

this entire development field is so fucked. lansky method and I all have similar core pc builds(2nd gen i5), with lanskys only varying slightly in his slightly worse video card.

streaming anything runs pretty shitty, especially tf2. shit runs fine for lansky. I had better luck with my old phenom build that died which makes literally no sense. I tried streaming QUAKEWORLD and even that comes with massive frameloss.

ill try this right now and see how it goes.

it + dxtory runs well, no chops on tf2

it has an impact on tribes, i was probably down to 60 frames instead of 90 but it was a massive server, on xsplit+dxtory it was much worse on arena servers.

seems to fuck up on soundblaster sound cards, other than that it's good and i'll be using it from now on :>

FFMPEG uses LAME. Although he's probably breaking some licence by not releasing source.

So I did some tests with this app + dxtory, and the result seems promising. Right now it's pretty much the same as what I had with xsplit.

What bitrate was that at? Also did you forget the login for your other twitch account? :D

no, I didn't forget. I have a few people who are subscribed to me (for whatever reason, I don't know) and they get alerts every time I go live. So I made a new channel to test out anything new I do with streaming.

Bitrate was at 2000, there's a 2300 bitrate test here: http://www.twitch.tv/jello_test/b/317847068 (My total upload is 5mbps, but I share it with family.)

I think these tests are proof enough that it has the potential to be just as good, if not better than, xsplit.

[edit]

specs!

cpu: i5 2500k
mobo: MSI p67a-g45
RAM: 8gb
GPU: EVGA GTX 560 ti SC
HDD: 1tb seagate
OS: win7 pro x64

if you've got a similar CPU/mobo/GPU combo I can recommend to you the settings that I used and you can try it out for yourself. No guarantees though since it depends on your internet speed as well.

FPS drops about to 30-60 with this. Obviously, doing something wrong. Using dxtory and used lansky's guide. What are everyones settings for FFsplit?

Edit: Seems like Dxtory causing the drops.

You haven't disabled file output or your res/bitrate is too high.

I get much better performance with higher quality using this. Impressive!

I'm using dxtory for video and when I alt tab out of TF2 for any more than like the stream lag time, my stream goes offline. Solution?

Bumping this.

So I decided to stream stuff I'm making for Stepmania. After trying to use Xsplit and failing, I tried this. This (and the video before it) is the result: http://www.twitch.tv/hookyboysb/b/319685627

While recording this, I was getting local lag. I was using screen-capture-recorder and virtual-audio-capturer as my computer doesn't like me and won't let me use Stereo Mix. I even had it set to 200 kbps and 640x360 (the connection is shared with my whole family, so it's kinda hard to stream good quality stuff). Could it be my hardware, or the settings? Or is it something else entirely?

hookyboysb: [edited out, some things I said were wrong]

Make sure you check for new versions daily. http://www.ffsplit.com/

your results/performance would depend largely on your specs. A quad core is always recommended for streaming no matter what software you are using. It is very resource intensive.

My temp.flv is always being used by another program and my stream never goes live, any help?

Can't even delete the folder because it's still being used by a program.

EDIT: Hmmm had to manually add it to bypass my firewall even though it was never prompted in the first place.

EDIT 2: Streaming windowed = 20 FPS + my mouse not being able to move (local lag) but Full screen = no lag + black screen on stream.

Trekkie: for now you have to use virtual audio cable. However built-in mic recording is in the works according to the developer.

The way I do it is creating an output Line 1 using VAC, and have windows play back the microphone & stereo mix through line 1 (as opposed to using VAC's repeater software).

Guan: try reporting/looking up your problem on the forums. I think I saw something related to temp.flv.

I checked out VAC, but was unable to figure out how to use it

could you post screenshot of your settings or the steps you used?

I got really bad local lag guan, but I turned the encoding setting to veryfast from default and it works with 0 frameloss and no lag. Still looks pretty decent as well.

are you sure you have your stream key input correctly?

I had a similar issue, and found out i had my stream key entered wrong.

I had 2 cables because I needed it for something else, but you only really need one. In this case I use "Line 1 (Virtual Audio Cable)"

http://i.imgur.com/heaH0.png

Then I have the microphone and stereo mix play back through Line 1.

It's not perfect though because for some reason my mic volume is really low. I have to turn the game volume down just to be able to hear myself.

[edit]

actually it turns out that by combining the audio streams as mentioned above, I can use the mixer to adjust the volume:

Guan: the latest version 0.3.2.0 should have solved the majority of the issues related to being stuck at "Encoding...". So first make sure you have that.

In fact I had the same issue last week and simply downloading the latest version fixed it.
