I was thinking lately about how random the pistol spread is and I want to get the opinion of the community. Do you guys think that the pistol should have a static spread? I think that the pistol should have a smaller (much, much smaller) version of the heavy cone of fire. If it hit the same exact spot every time I can foresee issues. Having pinpoint accuracy from any distance would be broken for middle and such. But I think that if all the shots would fall inside the boundaries of a small circle (such that you would have to hit the very center of the model to hit every single shot), it wouldn't be as devastating from long range but would still serve the purpose of consistency. I know there are a few players who are really good with pistol, but I still the weapon deserves a more skill-based registry pattern.

All arguments welcome.

although it would be quite powerful and a huge pissoff to demomen I agree that the seemingly random cone that the pistol has is annoying.

There is no good reason for there to be a spread imo. If the dps is too much, then the damage per shot should be nerfed/damage falloff should be increased.
People complain so much about hitreg as it is, why invite more moaning by decreasing the effective size of the model (by having to hit the center of the model for every hit, due to the small spread).

I dunno if I'd say no good reason, maybe Valve didn't want Scouts being able to harass Snipers way too easily at long ranges, rapid fire accurate hitscan weapons are not common in this game.

I do agree tho, but you'd prolly wind up needing to adjust the damage depending on how thin it got. (The spy Revolvers could prolly use the same tweaking too, Pistol + Revolvers are the only weps left with huge random spread on them)

would be great if spread was reduced. maybe we wouldnt have to deal with scouts trying to pistol each other and they land one shot a clip due to not only spread contributing to the awfulness but also hitreg

Hitscan spread is an abomination. You should never punish players for aiming well, bringing the damage into line is always more preferred than giving it spread.

It's not that the pistol is bad, it's that the firerate is slow so you have a really small sample size compared to something like LG in quake. That's why it's registration seems to inconsistent. If the pistol was perfectly accurate 90% of the people who complain about it now would still complain about it. That, and player models in TF2 can change direction retardedly fast compared to quake so you can't expect the same ability to track over here.

Usually happens when the server fps is unstable/playing on shit servers. Scattergun shots will be shit random, and pistol with usally hit everyshot aslong as you or/and the target is moving and remain accurate enough on them (net_graph 4 in console, where sv: 66.7 must be completely stable, else luck is more in place than skill, no matter what interp, cl_smooth 1 and some cl_smoothtime value will sometimes give you better hitreg if the server is bad)
