looking to buy 40+ inch 120+ htz tv for gaming.
anyone using anything acceptable?
I've taken back 2 tvs so far. laughable ghosting on a shit apex model, and horid response time on an otherwise amazing samsung. (claimed 3.6ms)

If you're looking for a TV that will accept a 120Hz input you're out of luck. All the 120Hz TV's take a 60Hz input and double the frames.

If you're looking for a good gaming TV look at some of the Panasonic and Samsung plasma tv's. Plasma phosphors refresh much faster than the pixels on any LCD screens. If you're wondering about a specific model just post it here.

Are there any with low latencies? I've tried before and there was a noticeable mouse lag, probably due to the higher latencies on TVs compared to monitors.

thx zak
I'm a moron. Finally getting around to doing some research now. Only got the tvs because they were 70 and 40 percent off. I did think it was weird how cheap 120hz tvs are. (even not on sale)

Not sure I even want a tv now. Seems like too much processing to get acceptable latency. or can this be false?

A lot of models have a game mode that basically disables processing.

If you're looking for something to play TF2 on I'd suggest saving your money. TV's are great for casual gaming, but as a monitor for an online FPS I'd stick with a 120Hz monitor.

Not sure if you're looking into LCD 120 hz tvs. But those can be pretty costly. I would suggest looking into Samsung, Samsung tvs tend to last a long time. But if you're looking for a cheap tv look at VIZIO.

Go to google and type in "120hz tv". I think you might want to make a budget for yourself unless you're a billionaire or something. :P

Ps. I did like the Samsung- LN40D630-40" LCD TV- 1080p.

I worked in home theater for 9 years. Avoid off brands. Vizio is ok, they use NEC panels for the most part. Not the best, but of the cheaper manufacturers they'll beat the piss out of Sanyo, Norcent, and whatever Taiwanese garbage WalMart is pushing the elderly these days.

My honest opinion would be to avoid LCD and get a 42" plasma... but everyone will scream "OMG THE BURN IN" and yeah, you could burn it in, but it's really tough to do with the phosphors they're using these days. Plasma will deliver deeper blacks, more vibrant colors, and really don't have any sort of "response time" or screen smear you get with LCD.

If you're dead-set on LCD, stick with Sharp or Toshiba. Avoid the Korean and Taiwanese panels, they're garbage. Vizio isn't bad, but for the same money you can get a Sharp.

yeah have a 46in samsung atm. response time is lol. It has a game mode which helps some, but it's deep in the menus, and screws with the video settings.

so the 3d tvs don't accept 120hz signals either?
looking at TC-P42ST30 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Panasonic+-+42%22+Class+/+Plasma+/+1080p+/+600Hz+/+3D+/+HDTV/2120283.p?id=1218310003974&skuId=2120283

also response time has to do with image processing doesn't it duder? I'm sure the crystals or phosphors are plenty fast enough these days

only real concern with plasma is heat output

You'll still see smear on the 240hz LCD's... unlike plasma phosphors, LCD or LED elements have an inherent delay between changing from one color to another... that's the response time. 5ms is good for a TV, 2ms is good for a monitor. Remember... there's two type of response... BWB and GTG. Black-white-black is more accurate as it gauges the true on-off time for the element... 8ms is good there. Grey-to-Grey is more misleading, as the element stays on and doesn't give you a true gauge of how quickly it'll respond from black... 2-6 ms is good there. Plasma phosphors are always on and respond immediately to input. Some companies will 'measure' the refresh rate and say like 600hz but it's just marketing... they're immediate.

Ultimately, I'd recommend you go to a store, plug a game in to the tv, and play it. If the salesmen says no, tell him he lost a sale. When I was selling in a commissioned environment I would have let someone fuck a TV if it closed the sale. Whatever you do, just make sure you get a feel for the response time and black levels with what you'll actually watch on it... the store loop is crap and so fucking over saturated and contrasted it's sick.

As far as heat goes, LCD and Plasma will be on par with each other... both will emit less heat than a DLP rear projection though... those things breath fire.

3d TV's don't accept a 120Hz input. Instead they have to take an encrypted signal sent over an HDMI cable and break it down into the two separate images.

The whole TV industry is so ass backwards. Find the display with the best picture at the biggest size you can afford and forget the extra features.

yeah I'm sorta getting that my interpretation of response time is mostly not the same as what they advertise response time to be.
I have the samsung LN46D630, and the advertised 4ms response time of the crystals would be great if it didn't take 40ms to process the image.
On another note the power consumption on LCD's without LED lighting is actually worse than plasmas these days.
Thanks for the help guys. Going with plasma.

edit: I fucking hate the extra features.

Plasma TV's definitely use more power than an equivalent sized LCD. On average you're looking at 2-3 times more energy consumption with a plasma.

Edit: Looking at numbers on random websites can be very misleading. Depending on the image being displayed a plasma TV can use less power. Plasma TV's use more power to display bright images since each individual phosphor is basically a light. LCD's use more power displaying dark images (with the exception of certain models with local backlight dimming) because the backlight is always on and to create darker images more of the "cells" need to be activated to filter out the light.

don't buy the samsung d630 for gaming
using http://tft.vanity.dk/inputlag.html and camera recording 240 fps

lag behind monitor assuming (frames assuming 60 fps signal)
vga connection: 3 frames or 50 - 60ms
hdmi: 6-7 frames 95-105ms
hdmi game mode: 3 frames 50 - 60ms
